Around noon this Wednesday there was a accident on the Pan-American highway that could have ended in tragedy. A truck crashed into a bridge and lost the container it was transporting. It happened at kilometer 36, on the Pilar branch, heading north. The event caused significant traffic delays and several kilometers of congestion. No injuries were reported.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. The vehicle collided with the structure of the Olivos Bridge, following a driver error: he miscalculated the height of the bridge with the load it was carrying. As a result of the impact, the container ended up detaching from the unit. At that time, traffic was intense and a car was affected by the accident: the container, which was empty, fell on him.
That smaller vehicle, a white Renault Clio, was driven by a woman (traveling alone) who, fortunately, was not injured, although she was treated by health personnel after the initial shock. After being hit by the container, the driver collided with the guardrail.
The owner of the transport company said that “luckily the only damage was the issue of the car.” He also assured, in dialogue with C5Nthat “all the trucks regularly pass through that place”, for which he could not find an explanation for what had happened.
The truck was heading to the Villa Rosa station and the driver, a native of Tortuguitas, admitted the mistake: “I misjudged the height. The sign said that he is 4.10 meters tall and I was 4.10 tall. It was fair. I always pass by here and this is the first time this has happened to me”.
Significant delays were recorded in the area. “Total diversion to Puente Los Olivos. Drive with caution”, they reported from Autopistas del Sol after the event. Members of the Gendarmerie, the Buenos Aires Police and Traffic and Autopistas del Sol personnel worked at the site to carry out all the skills and make traffic flow. The road was only released around 5:30 p.m.
Last night there was a similar incident on General Paz Avenue: A truck driver miscalculated the height of the Migueletes bridge, at the intersection with San Martín, and when he crashed, the container he was carrying fell off. As it fell, the huge piece ended up hitting the front of a Peugeot 206 car that was driving just behind the truck and where two people were traveling who suffered minor injuries and had to be hospitalized.
Last week, meanwhile, the Campana branch of the Panamericana was the scene of the fatal overturn of a cargo truck. The driver of the vehicle, which was crossed along the entire northbound route, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
As reported by the authorities in charge of the operation where the accident was recorded, this mistake happened around 2:30 in the morning of last Saturday at kilometer 77, when the vehicle was heading towards the Federal Capital.
The vehicle transported supermarket products -diapers, kitchen rolls, tea boxes, snack packages, among other products-, and all the merchandise was scattered on the asphalt. His final destination was the province of Córdoba.
Apparently, the driver lost control, crossed hands, overturned and the truck was completely crossed on the north hand. After the overturn, a strong police operation was mounted to carry out the corresponding custody of the merchandise and prevent people passing through the place from trying to take it by their own means.
